The importance of skin cancer screenings, even in the winter

Skin cancer. The idea of any type of cancer can be a scary notion for any patients. However, one of the benefits of skin cancer is that it is visible on the skin and can be detected early enough for successful intervention. At the Skin Center of South Miami, we strongly encourage patients to work with our dermatological team and schedule routine screenings for skin cancer every year. Skin cancer screenings are important, even in the winter.

What is the goal of skin cancer screenings?

During a skin cancer screening and evaluation, patients will have a head-to-toe examination performed by one of our experienced dermatologists. Finding areas of the skin that may show an indication of skin cancer is the goal. If there are unusual growths or changes to moles that cause reason for concern, the dermatologist will remove a small sample of it to have it tested to check for skin cancer cells. With a proper diagnosis, patients work with our team to discuss treatment options.

How often should skin cancer screenings be performed?

The dermatologists at our practice encourage patients to have skin cancer screenings performed annually. This allows our team to monitor new or changing growths that may be indicative of skin cancer. Patients who notice changes to their skin between appointments are still encouraged to make an appointment with a dermatologist to have that specific area evaluated further.

Why are skin cancer screenings important?

Skin cancer is one of the easiest cancers to diagnose in the earliest stages. This means that with proper diagnosis well before the cancer spreads, patients will have the best possible outcome. Patients who have already had skin cancer will want to continue to have routine screenings to rule out spreading or new areas of cancer that might develop.
