What skin concerns can a podiatrist treat?

At Skin Center of South Miami, our in-house podiatrist Dr. Masri specializes in a number of common foot concerns, including the following:

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a foot condition that affects a thick band of tissue called your fascia. This reaches from your toes to your heel and supports your foot’s arch. Those suffering from the condition might experience the following plantar fasciitis symptoms:

  • Heel pain at the bottom of your foot
  • Foot inflammation
  • Foot pain that worsens after sitting or standing for a length of time

Foot Tendonitis

Your extensor tendons are found in your hands and feet and help you control movement. While these tendons have an important job, they can be easily damaged, especially for those who play sports or practice repetitive movements using this tendon. If you have foot tendonitis, you might notice the following problems:

  • Pain at the top of your foot
  • Foot weakness
  • Inability to push off your toes or jump
  • Foot pain after standing of a length of time

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts, or foot warts, are small heel growths that might look like a callus. They are caused by a virus called HPV, which enters through breaks in your skin at the bottom of the feet. If you have this condition, you will likely have some of the following plantar warts symptoms and should seek treatment from Dr. Masri:

  • Growth on the bottom of the feet
  • The appearance of a foot callus in one spot of the foot
  • Pain and tenderness in the wart area on foot

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are common and painful conditions that affect the corner of your toenail and cause the nail to grow into the skin. Sometimes, an ingrown toenail can lead to an infection or severe pain, so it’s important to take steps in treating your condition. If you have an ingrown toenail, you might experience several of these irritating symptoms:

  • Pain and sensitivity around the toenail
  • Toe redness
  • Toe swelling
  • Infected areas surrounding the toenail

Foot Corns & Calluses

A corn on the foot is a patch of hardened or sensitive skin on the heel, toes, bottom, or another area of the foot, usually due to friction. A similar foot condition is called a foot callus (sometimes misspelled as foot callous), which takes the form of a hard, thick patch of skin on the foot. The condition can vary, and is also described as a hard corn, soft corn, or seed corn. If you have this condition, it might cause some of the following foot corn symptoms:

  • Hardened skin on the foot
  • Tenderness in a compact area
  • Redness on the foot
  • Patching of thin or smooth skin on the foot

Foot Arthritis

Foot and ankle arthritis can occur when the foot joints suffer wear and tear over time. It is a degenerative disease, so it often affects people who are older but it can also affect young athletes or people who have had foot injuries in the past. Visit Dr. Masri if you notice some of the following most common foot arthritis symptoms:

  • Foot pain
  • Foot tenderness
  • Swelling near a foot joint
  • Stiffness in the foot joint

Hammer Toes

Hammer toe, sometimes called mallet toe, is a term that describes a foot abnormality that can occur when a tendon, muscle, or ligament is not working properly. This could be due to wearing overly tight or constricting shoes, a past injury, or some diseases. Consider a visit to see Dr. Masri if you experience any of these hammer toe symptoms:

  • Abnormally bent toe
  • Pain when moving the toe
  • Pain when walking or wearing shoes
