Am I a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

woman getting dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are injections that are used for minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. These fillers can also be used to make thinning lips plumper. While they are generally effective, dermal fillers aren’t for everyone.

Reasons to Consider Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers might be a good option if you have signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines. Other reasons to consider getting fillers include:

  • Plump lips that are getting thin
  • Make shallow contours more noticeable
  • Minimize the appearance of recessed scar

In general, fillers cannot be used to get the same results as eyelifts, facelifts, and other surgical procedures. However, you can have them done in order to improve early signs of aging.

Types of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are made from several different materials. The type of dermal filler that would work best for you depends on different factors. The dermal fillers that are available include the following:

  • Collagen: The results of these fillers typically last up to four months.
  • Hyaluronic acid: These dermal fillers usually last for up to six months.
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite: The effects of these fillers last for roughly 18 months.
  • Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA): The results of these fillers can last up to two years if injections occur over the course of several months.
  • Polymethylmethacrylate beads: These provide semi-permanent results, although several injections are needed.

Who Makes a Good Candidates for Dermal Fillers?

People who are in good physical health and do not have any underlying health conditions that could affect healing are generally considered suitable candidates. Other factors include not being a smoker and not having deep lines or other issues that a facelift or other surgical procedure would work better. Your doctor will do a full evaluation to see if you are a suitable candidate for dermal fillers.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers offer a minimally invasive way to improve your appearance and minimize signs of aging. These treatment sessions are faster, and the recovery time is also shorter compared to recovering from facelifts and similar procedures. Dermal fillers provide a safe way to reduce fine lines and add volume to lips for those who make good candidates.

What to Expect

After numbing the area that will be treated, your doctor will give you injections, which are done quickly. After each injection, your doctor will massage the area and determine if more filler is needed. These treatment sessions can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on how many areas are being treated.

After treatment, the treated areas might become swollen or bruised. You might also have temporary redness or numbness in these areas. These effects should subside within days.
