What to expect at my first dermatology appointment

A dermatologist is a special medical professional that has unique and extended knowledge regarding conditions that impact the skin, hair, and nails. In many instances, a patient might be referred to a dermatologist by their primary care physician if there is an issue that is outside of his or her scope of knowledge. A dermatologist has the extended education and training to provide more concentrated care for an individual who may be not be able to receive the same type of care through a primary care provider.

At the Skin Center of South Miami, we understand that you might be nervous, not knowing what to expect from your first dermatology appointment. Our team can walk you through some of the most commonly asked questions from new patients in our South Miami, Florida area.

What does a dermatologist do?

A dermatologist provides the diagnosis and treatment of issues that impact the hair, nails, and skin. They help patients manage conditions such as skin cancer, eczema, vitiligo, acne, hair thinning and loss, and nail fungus, just to name a few.

When should I see a dermatologist?

Patients should visit a dermatologist at least once a year for a full evaluation and an annual skin cancer screening. Patients with certain skin conditions may see a dermatologist more often for the management of treatment of this condition.

How long does a dermatological appointment last?

The length of the appointment varies depending on several different factors. An appointment scheduled to discuss nail fungus, for example, would be much faster than an appointment where a patient is having an annual skin cancer check. When you call for your appointment, our front office team can provide the approximate time needed for the visit based on your concerns.

When should I arrive at my appointment?

New patients to the Skin Center of South Miami should arrive approximately ten to fifteen minutes prior to their appointment time to complete new patient paperwork. Be sure to bring with you your medical insurance information as well as a list of any medications or products you are currently taking or using.
