What’s the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
At the Skin Center of South Miami, patients in the community can connect with a team of professionals available to improve the skin and body. Our providers are equipped with the knowledge and experience to manage a number of conditions that affect the skin, including dryness and dehydration. But is there a difference? Is dry skin different than dehydrated skin? Our team breaks down the characteristics of both and talks about how each can be treated to rehydrate and moisturize the surface of the skin, improving texture and tone.
What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin is a unique skin type, while dehydrated skin is actually more of a skin condition. Dry skin produces less sebum, or oils, than normal skin, which can lead to a feeling of tightness and flakiness.
Dehydrated skin lacks water, not oil. It can feel dry, tight, and look dull. Fine lines are more visible, and the complexion can appear uneven. Dehydrated skin can happen to any skin type, even oily skin, when it lacks moisture.
Addressing dry skin
Dry skin needs products that will replenish its lipids and give it back elasticity. A dry skin care routine should involve a face wash for dry skin, followed by a moisturizer for dry skin. Face serums and face oils can also be beneficial for dry skin types.
Addressing dehydrated skin
Dehydrated skin needs products that will help it to attract and retain moisture. A face serum or face oil can be helpful for dehydrated skin, as they are more easily absorbed than a face cream. Follow with a hydrating face cream or gel moisturizer to help lock in the moisture. Use a hydrating mask once or twice a week, and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
