When Should a Mole Be Evaluated for Melanoma?

Your skin can reveal important changes over time, and moles are one of the most common areas where those changes appear. While most moles are harmless, certain changes or new spots can signal melanoma, a type of skin cancer that requires prompt attention. The good news is that melanoma is highly treatable when caught early, which makes staying aware of changes in your skin a simple but powerful step toward protecting your health.

At Skin Center of South Miami, patients are cared for by a skilled team of board-certified dermatology professionals. Dr. Franz Kerdel brings strong clinical and research experience, Dr. Varee N. Poochareon is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology with award-winning training from the University of Miami, and Dr. Todd R. Coven is a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon specializing in skin cancer treatment. Along with Mariam Borges, PA-C, our team carefully evaluates moles and provides clear guidance on appropriate care.

When a Mole Might Be Worth a Closer Look

Dermatologists commonly recommend using the ABCDE rule as a simple way to evaluate moles. This method helps identify changes that may need a closer look:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other
  • B – Border: Edges appear irregular, uneven, or blurred
  • C – Color: Multiple shades or uneven coloring within the same mole
  • D – Diameter: Larger than about 6 mm (roughly the size of a pencil eraser)
  • E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or appearance over time

In addition to the ABCDE rule, pay attention to any symptoms such as itching, bleeding, or crusting. A mole that looks noticeably different from others, often called the “ugly duckling,” is also worth evaluating.
